The Letter is the lead track from Cosmic Groove's EP A New, Clear Winter — a narrative EP told from the perspective of a civilian recruited as a soldier in World War 2, who continues to serve through to the Cold War. The music follows him through the defining moments of twentieth century history: not as a figure of heroism, but as an ordinary person caught inside extraordinary events.
The animation was directed and produced independently, from storyboard to final render. The visual language is 2D hand-drawn frame-by-frame. The colours used are calm, soothing and bright, working in contrast to the weight of the subject matter. Themes of war and loss are rendered in soft tones rather than gloom, highlighting the intimacy of a letter within the grandeur of history.
